Beachwood has one of the most unique origins in Ocean County. Back in 1914, the New York Tribune ran a subscription promotion offering readers small plots of land along the Toms River as a summer getaway. Thousands of city residents took the train down, picked their lots, and built modest bungalows around a bustling clubhouse, pier, and yacht club. The summer retreat quickly evolved into a year-round community, while the remaining undeveloped acreage eventually became part of Jakes Branch County Park right next door.

Life here still revolves around the water and the woods. During the summer, neighbors gather at Beachwood Beach for town fireworks, launch boats from the borough ramp, or catch open-air movie nights at Mayo Park. You will need seasonal badges for the beach and permits for the municipal launch, but residents appreciate having an easy waterfront escape without heavy tourist crowds. On the western edge of town, Jakes Branch County Park serves as a scenic gateway to the Pine Barrens, featuring miles of walking trails, athletic fields, and a five-story observation deck with sweeping views across the treetops.
