Beaufort, NC

Beaufort is North Carolina's third-oldest town, known for its coastal charm, walkable waterfront, and relaxed pace. With around 4,500 year-round residents, it has a friendly, small-town atmosphere right on the harbor. Strolling through the historic district, you will see centuries-old cottages shaded by live oaks, local seafood spots, and boats docked along Front Street. The town also embraces its maritime heritage, from the moss-covered Old Burying Ground to pirate lore tied to Blackbeard, whose flagship ran aground just offshore.

Daily life naturally centers on the water, with views of wild horses across the channel at the Rachel Carson Reserve. Beaufort hosts Duke University’s Marine Lab and an active traditional boatbuilding center, giving the harbor a distinctive character. Local schools, libraries, and county services are conveniently situated near downtown. For larger shopping centers, hospital facilities, and the open beaches of the Crystal Coast, Morehead City and Atlantic Beach are just a few minutes away across the bridge on Highway 70.
