Beckemeyer, IL

Beckemeyer is a Clinton County village in Wade Township, five minutes from Carlyle Lake and within easy reach of the highways running toward St. Louis and the Metro East. Its first chapter was Buxton, a way station on the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad. Samuel B. Watkins settled nearby in 1817; a coal vein found in 1894 changed the village's prospects, and the name Beckemeyer took hold when the community incorporated in 1905. Rail, coal, and farming all remain part of the local memory.

The village's present map is practical and close to home. Route 50 passes through town, the village handles water, permits, payments, and other municipal work, and Carlyle Lake supplies a nearby outlet for boating and outdoor time. A coal miner monument near the American Legion remembers Beckemeyer residents lost in the 1947 Centralia mine disaster. Community events and the small elementary-school connection keep the village tied to neighboring Breese and Carlyle. Beckemeyer is a rural Illinois place where industrial history sits beside farm roads and lake country.
