Bedford, IA

Bedford is Taylor County’s seat in the southern tier of Iowa, set along the East Fork of the One Hundred and Two River. The city is believed to have taken its name from Thomas J. Bedford, a Pony Express rider associated with the final westbound mail run in 1861. County offices and the courthouse give the town a civic role beyond its size, while the surrounding country remains strongly agricultural. Bedford Community School District adds another institution that keeps families connected to the center.

A few miles northeast, Lake of Three Fires State Park gives the area an outdoor dimension. Its 85-acre lake, camping, equestrian facilities, boat and fishing access, beach, and multi-use trails draw residents from across Taylor County, and Bedford’s July parade and lake fireworks turn the park into part of the city calendar. Main Street, county offices, schools, farms, and the road toward Missouri make up the everyday map. Bedford is a county-seat town with a park close by, where courthouse business and lake weekends share the same local geography.
