Beech Island, SC

Beech Island is an unincorporated Aiken County community on the South Carolina side of the Savannah River region, tied to Augusta, Georgia, across the river. The area was one of the colonial townships laid out in 1730, and the Beech Island Historical Society traces the local story through Savanno Town, George Galphin’s trading center, and Silver Bluff Missionary Baptist Church. Today the community is a census-designated place served by Aiken County schools, with Redcliffe Elementary, Jackson Middle, and Silver Bluff High forming part of the local map.

Redcliffe Plantation State Historic Site, completed in 1859, is the clearest landmark. It preserves the Hammond mansion, surviving slave quarters, and the stories of the Black and white families who lived there through Reconstruction and into the twentieth century. Beech Island was primarily agricultural before the 1950s, and that older farm landscape still frames the roads around the historic sites. Put Beech Island between the Savannah River and Aiken, then keep both layers in view: colonial and plantation history on the ground, and Augusta’s larger regional economy just across the river.
