Belle Center, OH

Belle Center is a Logan County village that grew from a railroad competition in the 1840s. The area was once wet ground, but settlers began filling the northern part of Richland Township, and a town was platted in 1846. Belle Center won the proposed Mad River and Lake Erie Railroad water stop over the older settlement of Richland, and the railroad’s arrival shaped the village’s diagonal street layout. The Ohio General Assembly incorporated Belle Center five years later. The 2020 census counted 809 residents.

The village’s name points to its location between Bellefontaine and Kenton, while the Mad River remains part of the wider Logan County geography. Belle Center has a public library and has held Tree City USA recognition every year since 2005, caring for the mix of trees that lines its streets and public spaces. The railroad is no longer the daily engine it once was, but its route still helps make sense of the village’s shape. Belle Center is a small Ohio community with a water-stop beginning, a diagonal map, and a civic habit of tending the town’s trees.
