Belle, MO

At the meeting of Missouri Routes 28 and 89, Belle stretches across northeast Maries County and a small piece of southeast Osage County, with Route 42 nearby. The city sits on high ground that drains toward the Gasconade River to the northwest and the Dry Fork to the southeast. Vienna, the Maries County seat, is about 17 miles southwest; Bland and Linn connect Belle to the neighboring county roads. The two-county boundary gives the city a wider regional map than its compact highway center suggests.

Belle grew around a post office opened in 1895 and a Rock Island railroad depot. The local naming story centers on Belle Wallace, whose father gave land for the first school and First Christian Church. Today education remains a visible institution: Maries County R-II operates Belle Elementary and High School, and the Heartland Regional Library System has a branch in town.
