Bellefonte, KY

Bellefonte is a small Greenup County city just northwest of Ashland, with 920 residents in the 2020 census. State Route 5 and Country Club Drive run through the city on a plateau above the Ohio River valley, and the short distance to Ashland ties Bellefonte to the larger Huntington-Ashland metro. Bellefonte incorporated in 1951 from a residential area that grew around the old Bellefonte charcoal furnace. The Bellefonte Country Club sits inside the city's small footprint with its golf course, pool, tennis courts, and clubhouse. The old furnace site and Presbyterian church keep the earlier industrial and religious history visible, while public-school students attend Russell Independent School District schools in neighboring communities; there are no public schools within Bellefonte itself. Bellefonte is a compact residential city whose local map is defined by the plateau, the country club, the furnace ruins, and Ashland just beyond it.
