Sitting right on the Wisconsin-Illinois border, Beloit is a historic river city that has found fresh momentum in recent years. The Rock River runs right through the center of town, originally powering the mills and heavy manufacturing plants that put Beloit on the map. Beloit College has anchored the community since before Wisconsin was even a state, giving the area a classic collegiate feel with its leafy campus and red-brick architecture. Outdoors and weekend pastimes revolve around the river and a revitalized downtown. Riverside Park features miles of paved riverfront paths lined with public art and boat launches, while Big Hill Park offers scenic bluff views, wooded hiking trails, and cross-country skiing in the winter. Sports fans can catch a Beloit Sky Carp minor league baseball game right downtown at ABC Supply Stadium, which also hosts movie nights and holiday events throughout the year. On Saturday mornings from spring through fall, the downtown farmers market turns several city blocks into one of the largest open-air markets in the region. Between campus art galleries, craft breweries, boutique hotels, and cozy cafes, there is plenty to do close to home.

The housing market is relatively affordable compared to larger nearby metros, with a varied mix of historic Victorian homes near campus, sturdy mid-century ranches, and newer suburban subdivisions on the city fringes.
