Belton, TX

Nolan Creek winds straight through downtown Belton, giving this historic Central Texas town a relaxed, scenic core. At the center of it all sits the Bell County courthouse square, surrounded by local boutiques, bakeries, and casual spots to grab a bite. Paved trails follow along the water through Yettie Polk Park, where people regularly walk dogs, fish, or wade into the creek during warm summer afternoons. While Belton has grown steadily to over 25,000 residents, it still manages to keep its friendly, small-town identity even as it expands alongside neighboring Temple and Killeen.

Much of the town's lively energy comes from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. The campus sits just north of downtown, bringing nearly 4,000 students, athletic events, and performing arts into daily local life. Belton also benefits from a prime Central Texas location at the crossroads of Interstate 35 and Interstate 14. Commuters have quick access to major regional employers like Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Temple and Fort Cavazos in Killeen. On top of that, local manufacturing plants and business parks along the highway corridors provide solid job opportunities right in town.

You will find century-old homes on tree-lined streets near downtown, well-established midcentury subdivisions, and brand-new master-planned communities on the city's outer edges. Families are frequently drawn here by the Belton Independent School District, which holds a strong reputation across the region. When the weekend rolls around, outdoor recreation is right down the road. Belton Lake sits directly to the north, and Stillhouse Hollow Lake lies just to the south, giving boaters, kayakers, campers, and anglers two massive reservoirs within a 15-minute drive.

Community traditions run deep here, and most local events tie back to the creek, the campus, and the courthouse. The Nolan Creek Hike and Bike Trail connects Yettie Polk Park with campus, making it easy to run errands or go for an evening stroll by the water. Nearby, Miller Springs Nature Center offers rugged hiking trails right below Belton Dam. The biggest event on the calendar is Belton's legendary Fourth of July Celebration, which dates back more than a century. The annual parade marches from the university straight through downtown, drawing thousands of spectators for a week of rodeo action, carnival rides, and fireworks.
