About Benham

Benham is a home rule-class city in Harlan County, Kentucky, in the United States. The 2020 census counted 512 residents. The city was formally incorporated by the General Assembly in 1961. Benham was originally a company town for International Harvester. That mix gives Benham a clear local shape within Kentucky, with older layers still visible in current places. The local scoop is a place whose streets, landmarks, and institutions keep its earlier story close to the present. The Benham Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of the coal town. Looney Creek flows west to the Poor Fork of the Cumberland River in neighboring Cumberland. Benham includes a historic district.
