Benkelman, NE

Benkelman is a Dundy County city and county seat of 821 residents in the 2020 census, in the southwestern corner of Nebraska near the Colorado and Kansas lines. The Republican River runs through the county, and U.S. Highway 34 plus Nebraska Highways 27 and 61 connect the city to the surrounding ranch and farm country. Agriculture, small businesses, and hunting tourism remain part of the local economy.

The settlement began around 1880 as Collinsville, named for Moses Collins. In 1882 the railroad renamed it Benkelman, after J. Benkelman, and the BNSF line still follows the river corridor from east to west. The county courthouse and Dundy County offices give the city its seat-of-government role, while the old rail line shows why a town took hold here in the first place. The courthouse, railroad, and river keep those older layers close to present-day streets and fields. Benkelman is a high-plains county seat where water, rail, and long distances set the pace.
