Bennington, KS

Bennington is an Ottawa County city laid out in the Solomon Valley during the railroad era. It was platted in 1878, and the Solomon Valley Railroad, a branch of the Kansas Pacific, reached town that same year. Within three years, the new city had passed 200 residents; the 2020 census counted 622. Its name carries two local explanations: one account gives the meaning “place of fine trees,” while another credits co-founder George R. Parker and Bennington, Vermont. That uncertainty belongs to the town’s early period, when rail access and local naming were still shaping the map.

Today, Bennington is served by Twin Valley USD 240 and remains a compact city set in rural Ottawa County. The city’s history follows the school’s development from a building south of town in 1879 through later additions in the twentieth century, giving education a long-running local role. Hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters mark the central Kansas climate. With 622 residents in 2020, Bennington is easiest to picture as a small rail-founded city whose town site, school district, and surrounding Solomon Valley remain closely connected.
