Berkley knows how to bring neighbors together, especially when it comes to local traditions. Every August, CruiseFest packs 12 Mile Road with classic cars as a laid-back local prelude to the Woodward Dream Cruise. In October, the whole town gets playful for BOO!kley, decorating sidewalks and storefronts with creative skeleton displays. Warmer months draw crowds downtown for the Berkley Art Bash and Street Art Fest. What makes these events so easy to enjoy is the town's walkable layout. Downtown is split across two main corridors along 12 Mile Road and Coolidge Highway, and because quiet residential blocks start right behind the storefronts, you can easily stroll from home to dinner, coffee, or a street fair.

Berkley grew quickly in the early 20th century as streetcars and the booming auto industry drew families north from Detroit. By the middle of the century, the city had settled into the cozy grid of tree-lined streets and well-kept bungalows, ranches, and brick homes you see today. Tucked neatly between Woodward Avenue to the east and Greenfield Road to the west, Berkley has held onto its small-town scale.
