Berlin sits 2,323 feet above sea level in Somerset County's Brothersvalley country, about 11 miles southeast of Somerset. German and Swiss settlers shaped the borough before it was laid out in 1784 and incorporated in 1833. The town became a flashpoint during the Whiskey Rebellion, including a 1794 riot at the Berlin Schoolhouse; that episode now returns in the annual fall Whiskey Rebellion celebration. The Berlin Fife and Drum Corps, one of North America's oldest such bands, adds a living musical thread, while the Berlin Brothersvalley School District serves local students. Snyder of Berlin potato chips and Center Rock drilling equipment are made locally, alongside farming and older coal work. Nearby Shanksville and the Flight 93 National Memorial are part of the area's modern historical map.
