Bessemer, MI

Bessemer is the seat of Gogebic County, a hills-and-valleys city on U.S. 2 in Michigan's western Upper Peninsula. Iron ore gave the place its beginning: in 1880, hunter and trapper Richard Langford found ore beneath an overturned birch, and the discovery helped open the Colby property. The city sits north of Colby Hill, with Ironwood to the west and Wakefield to the east, a highway position that connects the county seat to the rest of the Gogebic range.

Outdoor life fills in the present-day map. The Iron Belle Trail gives cyclists and walkers a paved route through the area, while Bluff Valley Park and Milwaukee Lake add water, woods, and seasonal recreation.
