Bessemer, PA

Bessemer is a small Lawrence County borough near the Ohio line, established in 1913 on 1.7 square miles of western Pennsylvania. The borough’s working history is tied to cement, limestone, and brick: local labor helped turn nearby mineral deposits into building materials used across the region. That industrial identity gives Bessemer a different feel from a purely residential suburb, even though Pittsburgh sits within the wider metropolitan orbit. The 2020 census counted 1,073 residents, and Mohawk Area School District serves local students.

Today the borough’s scale is easy to read in its municipal systems. Bessemer operates its own water system, the Bessemer Municipal Authority handles sewer service, and the H. Spencer Carr Municipal Building is home to local government on East Poland Avenue. Community Days and the F. D. Campbell Library keep the social side of the borough visible, while the Ohio state line and nearby New Castle connect it to a larger western Pennsylvania–eastern Ohio landscape.
