Bethany, MO

Bethany is Harrison County's seat in northwest Missouri, about midway between Kansas City and Des Moines on Interstate 35. The 2020 census counted 2,915 residents. The county chose Bethany as its seat in 1842, the city incorporated in 1860, and the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad arrived in the late 19th century. Today the interstate has replaced the rail line as the obvious regional connector, but the old county-seat and trading-town role still shapes the square. Water is the other big local thread.

Bethany has an 18-acre Old City Lake and a 73-acre New City Lake inside town; Harrison County Lake, a 280-acre recreation reservoir, sits nine miles north. South Harrison County R-II schools serve local students, and Big Creek runs along the west side. The lakes keep the county seat tied to water as well as highways.
