Bethel, MN

Bethel is a one-square-mile city in northern Anoka County, about 30 miles north of Minneapolis and bordered by St. Francis and East Bethel. Its Main Street and 237th Avenue/County Road 24 organize a compact grid, with Minnesota 65 nearby and a BNSF rail line running through the city toward northern Minnesota. Bethel was first settled by Quakers in 1856, became a post office community at Bethel Corners, and was incorporated as a village in 1902 before becoming a city in 1974.

Water and wetlands shape the edges. Sandshore Lake sits inside the city, while the 756-acre Bethel Wildlife Management Area includes wetland, wooded wetland, upland woodland, grassland, and a sand-plain prairie planting. City Hall operates from Bethel Community Church, and the city park has a pavilion and ball field for local gatherings. A brewery and the traditional Main Street add a small commercial center to the residential streets. Bethel’s daily map is compact enough to walk through on paper: homes, rail, lake, park, church, and wetland are all parts of one square-mile city.
