Bettendorf's name records the factory deal that shaped its early growth. Around the turn of the twentieth century, residents of the community then called Gilbert raised $15,000 to buy a site for William and Joseph Bettendorf's iron-wagon factory. When the town incorporated in 1903 with 440 residents, it adopted the brothers' name. Bettendorf now occupies the Iowa bank of the Mississippi River beside Davenport and forms part of the five-city Quad Cities region with communities across the river in Illinois. The municipal park system connects river access with recreation farther inland. Bettendorf reports more than 700 acres across 27 park sites, two public boat launches and docks, 14 miles of fitness and recreation trails, and 17 miles of separated trails. The Landing added a permanent ice rink in 2024 and a YMCA-operated water park in 2025.

At the Learning Campus, the Family Museum, Bettendorf Public Library, and Faye's Field share one civic complex. The museum's 44,000 square feet include an interactive exhibit hall, art and science studios, preschool rooms, performance and dance space, and an outdoor playground. The library's Creation Studio, opened in 2022, gives the public access to 3D printers, a laser cutter, sewing machines, digital cutting tools, and scheduled workshops or open work periods. The city's 2026 calendar makes the campus a recurring event site: a farmers market uses Faye's Field three days a week in season, Thursday evening library concerts run from June into August, and the annual Discovery Fair spreads free activities across the museum, library, and field. Friday concerts and summer movies take place separately at Veterans Memorial Park.
