Big Bay, MI

Big Bay is a quiet village tucked between Lake Superior and Lake Independence in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Sitting roughly 30 miles northwest of Marquette at the end of County Road 550, it offers a peaceful, tucked-away setting surrounded by dense northern forests and open water. The community grew out of the 19th-century timber boom, and today it appeals to anyone looking for a slower pace, great fishing, and immediate access to the outdoors.

The town is also well known for its brush with Hollywood history. In the late 1950s, director Otto Preminger filmed the classic courtroom drama Anatomy of a Murder on location around Big Bay, drawing inspiration from a real 1952 case tied to the Lumberjack Tavern. Historic spots like the Thunder Bay Inn and the Big Bay Point Lighthouse still draw curious visitors, but day to day, the area remains a down-to-earth haven for snowmobilers, anglers, and neighbors who appreciate life off the beaten path.
