Big Horn, WY

Big Horn is a Sheridan County CDP of 457 residents in the 2020 census on the eastern slope of the Bighorn Mountains along Little Goose Creek. The Bozeman Trail crossed the area from 1866 to 1868, and the old blacksmith shop now houses the Bozeman Trail Museum. Ranching followed: cattle and sheep operators established large operations along the mountain base in the 1890s, leaving Big Horn with a Western working history tied to the creek and the mountain roads. The K-12 school remains one of the main centers of the local calendar, with nearly 400 students in Sheridan County School District No. 1.

The Big Horn Equestrian Center adds multi-purpose events, including the Mars Big Horn Mountain Spring Cup, and the Community Recreation and Early Learning Center is designed to serve students and the wider community. The museum and school are both on the local civic map, so history and education sit alongside ranch roads instead of being separated from them. Big Horn is a small ranching community where school, museum, horses, and mountain roads share one map.
