Big Stone City, SD

Big Stone City is built into a border landscape: it lies between the southern tip of Big Stone Lake and the north bank of the Whetstone River, directly beside Ortonville, Minnesota. The community was established in 1878 as Inkpa City, served as Grant County’s seat from 1880 to 1883, and was incorporated in 1885 under the name taken from the lake. The 2020 census counted 412 residents.

Big Stone Lake gives the city its main physical reference and supports fishing and other water-based recreation. The present civic map includes the Grant County Library’s Big Stone City Branch, a community center, municipal offices, and Big Stone City School District 25-1. The city office also handles building permits and energy incentives for residents and businesses. Industrial and manufacturing activity, local health care, and the school system all appear in the city’s current municipal picture. Its adjacency to Ortonville makes the area function across the South Dakota–Minnesota line, with the two cities sharing the lake’s southern reach while retaining separate governments and school systems.
