Biscoe, NC

Biscoe is a Montgomery County town on the ridge where U.S. 220 Alternate and North Carolina Highways 24 and 27 cross. The place began as Filo and became Biscoe in 1895, named for Major Biscoe, a Philadelphia lumber and grain merchant who bought heavily from the region. The Aberdeen and West End Railroad made Biscoe a railroad town, and early industry included a cotton mill, foundry, machine shops, and railroad-equipment repair. Biscoe’s early schools drew students from neighboring counties by rail, making education part of the town’s original regional role. Water drains from the ridge toward both the Little River and Lick Creek, putting the highway junction between the Pee Dee and Cape Fear watersheds.
