Bismarck, MO

Bismarck is a St. Francois County city in the western Ozarks, where Missouri Highway 32 meets local routes and the former Iron Mountain rail corridor. The 2020 census counted 1,239 residents. The city has a general aviation airport, senior center, schools, shops, and rail lines that still pass through the center. Farming, local service work, and nearby mining country have all shaped its economy, while Farmington and other county communities handle larger regional errands. The county's mining history remains part of the regional economy, even as Bismarck's own center remains rail-oriented.

Bismarck was platted in 1868 at a split between the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railroad and the Belmont branch, and incorporated in 1877. The name honored German statesman Otto von Bismarck as the founders sought German settlers. Early growth followed trains, mills, a grain elevator, hotels, blacksmiths, and farm trade. Missouri Pacific and Missouri-Illinois lines once made Bismarck a connecting point. Today Highway 32, the rail bed, airport, and downtown businesses still show that railroad-service-town origin.
