Black Hammock, FL

Black Hammock is a Seminole County census-designated place on the southern shore of Lake Jesup, east of Oviedo and inside the outer edge of the Orlando area. The 2020 census counted 1,195 residents. The name fits the setting: a low, wet forest landscape where cypress, hardwoods, and open water meet. Seminole County's Black Hammock Wilderness Area preserves roughly 700 acres along the lake, with trails and habitat tucked behind the roads that lead into the community. The lake gives Black Hammock its distinctive local rhythm.

Airboat operators and old-style fish-camp businesses share the area with residential roads, while State Road 434 and the routes around Oviedo handle the larger daily trips. The Lake Jesup shoreline is part of a much bigger natural system, but the CDP itself feels like a small outpost inside a fast-growing county.
