About Bloomfield

Bloomfield is the Greene County seat, laid out in 1824 after Burlington, the earlier county-seat site west of town, proved unreliable for water. The first building was a log courthouse in the center; the current brick courthouse stands on the same site, making the town square a literal continuation of the county's government story. South of town, archaeologists have studied a Woodland-period settlement near the meeting of Richland Creek and the White River, tying Bloomfield's present map to a much older one. Bloomfield School District keeps grades K-12 together locally, and the town's calendar includes the annual Apple Festival and Parade in October plus a Lighted Christmas Parade. Within Bloomington's wider metro area and surrounded by White River country, Bloomfield is a small Indiana county seat where courthouse, school, river, and seasonal events shape the local read.
