Blooming Grove, TX

Blooming Grove is a Navarro County town whose roots reach back to Gradyville, a village established in the 1860s by brothers R.J. and W.D. Grady. When a postal station arrived in 1871, Blooming Grove became the chosen name. A branch of the Cotton Belt railroad opened in 1888, shifting the village about a mile northeast toward the tracks, and the town incorporated in 1890. The move put a rural settlement, a post office, and a rail line into one recognizable center in western Navarro County.

Blooming Grove has long depended on cotton production and cattle raising, but its local story is carried by institutions too. Public schools began in 1869, the Blooming Grove Masonic lodge was chartered in 1888, and the Blooming Grove Times began in 1890. Churches from the older Gradyville area continued at the new town site, and the Blooming Grove Independent School District still gives the community a shared center. The town's name, rail line, school, and farm economy all grew out of the same shift from the older village toward the railroad.
