Blue Lake, CA

Located along the Mad River about five miles east of Arcata, Blue Lake is best known for having warmer, sunnier weather than the foggy Humboldt coast. The town got its name from a temporary lake that disappeared over a century ago when the river shifted, but the name stuck. Today, it has grown into a quiet, tight-knit valley community surrounded by redwood hills and big skies.

Everyday life here centers around the river and a creative local culture. On weekends, residents cool off at the gravel bars, catch live music at the Mad River Brewery, or watch baseball games at Perigot Park. The historic downtown is also home to the Dell'Arte International School of Physical Theatre, which brings a steady stream of artists and community festivals to town. With its laid-back pace and quick drive into Arcata or Eureka, Blue Lake offers a peaceful spot to settle down.
