Bluff, UT

In 2020, Bluff had 240 residents on the north side of the San Juan River, near the mouth of Cottonwood Wash. Red-rock cliffs, sandy river bottom, and the wider canyon country of southeastern Utah set the scene. The town’s founding belongs to one of the West’s toughest overland stories. About 230 Mormon settlers, led by John Taylor, Silas S. Smith, and Jens Nielson, crossed the Hole-in-the-Rock route in 1880. After months of labor, the company reached the San Juan on April 6 and established Bluff City. Irrigation, river crossings, and hard travel shaped the settlement from its first days.

Bluff was incorporated in 2018, but its older character still comes through in the river corridor and the historic town layout. Cottonwoods soften the desert edge, and the river gives the community a different rhythm from the high plateaus and mesas around it. San Juan School District’s Bluff Elementary School serves local children, while nearby roads lead toward the Four Corners landscape, canyon overlooks, and public lands. For a small place, Bluff carries a large founding story, and the meeting of river, wash, and red rock makes that story easy to picture when you arrive.
