Bluffdale, UT

The Jordan Narrows shaped much of Bluffdale's early geography. Water diverted there fed a system that grew to seven canals, bringing more settlers to land between the Salt Lake and Utah valleys. The city's detailed history identifies Jens and Rise Madsen and Chris Petersen's family as the first permanent settlers in 1862. A narrow-gauge railroad arrived around 1876, and when a post office opened in 1888, the community temporarily used the name Mousley because Bluff was considered too similar for postal purposes. Bluffdale chose incorporation rather than a merger with Riverton in 1978. Its growth has since been substantial: the population increased from 7,598 in 2010 to 17,014 in the 2020 census, and the city now spans portions of Salt Lake and Utah counties. Open space still has a practical role amid that growth. Bluffdale maintains nearly 60 acres of public parkland across nine park sites, plus open-space parcels and approximately 16 miles of trails.

Those routes include part of the Jordan River Parkway as well as pedestrian and equestrian paths. City Park has an equestrian arena alongside its fields and courts, preserving a place for riding within the municipal recreation system. Day Ranch Park has become a recurring gathering point: in 2026, weekly Food Truck Tuesdays ran from May into September with arts activities, outdoor movies, and river-focused programs mixed into the schedule. Old West Days uses several venues for a rodeo, theatrical performances, pickleball, a parade, a family festival, a concert, and fireworks. The city also programs walks and junior-ranger activities along the Jordan River. Those events tie Bluffdale's older canal, rail, and horse history to present-day parks rather than treating the open land only as scenery between newer subdivisions.
