Boise City, OK

Out in the far western stretch of the Oklahoma Panhandle, Boise City serves as the welcoming hub of Cimarron County. The town began with a wild backstory back in 1908, when fast-talking land promoters sold thousands of lots using brochures that promised paved roads, tree-lined avenues, and rail lines. The promoters ended up in prison for fraud, but determined settlers arrived and built a thriving high-plains community anyway. Today, several major highways converge around the courthouse square at the center of town, making it a natural gathering spot for travelers and folks from across the county.

Life here revolves around big skies, open land, and deep agricultural roots. Cattle ranching, wheat farming, and energy production anchor the local economy, supported by families who stayed through the Dust Bowl to build a resilient community. The town also holds an unusual claim to fame as the only place in the continental United States accidentally bombed during World War II. In 1943, a disoriented B-17 crew mistook the courthouse square lights for a nighttime target range and dropped practice bombs on the streets. Nobody was hurt, and the town still commemorates the famous mix-up with a historical marker right on the square.

Residents have access to a local hospital, public schools, a golf course, a swimming pool, and well-kept parks. Down the road, the Cimarron Heritage Center showcases the region's rich story, with exhibits on everything from local dinosaur tracks to the Santa Fe Trail.
