Bonita, CA

The Sweetwater River valley is Bonita's organizing landscape. The census-designated place occupies unincorporated San Diego County in the South Bay, and the 2020 census counted 12,917 residents across 5.02 square miles of land. County planning identifies Bonita with the Sweetwater community east of Interstate 805, where Bonita and Sweetwater roads follow the valley from west to east. The river and surrounding hills limit north-south road connections; much of the river corridor is instead used for parks, golf courses, trails, and other open space. The valley is part of the homeland of the Kumeyaay people. Its later agricultural history included citrus cultivation around Bonnie Brae Ranch after completion of Sweetwater Dam in 1888. The Bonita Museum & Cultural Center interprets the area's Kumeyaay, water, agricultural, and community history in two galleries. Sweetwater Summit Regional Park concentrates several forms of public recreation near Bonita.

Its 15 miles of trails accommodate walking, cycling, and horseback riding, while 112 campsites, a seasonal splash pad, an exercise course, picnic spaces, a community room, and an outdoor theater support longer visits and group activities. The adjoining Sweetwater Bike Park has four jump lines graded from beginner to expert, a children's pump track, a skills zone, two flow trails, and a connecting perimeter trail. At Morrison Pond, a loop extending up to five miles provides a separate birding and walking destination. Indoor community activity centers on the Bonita-Sunnyside branch of the San Diego County Library, which has a meeting room, public computers and Wi-Fi, a 3D printer, and a calendar that included citizenship instruction, chess, chair yoga, tai chi, and ukulele sessions in July 2026.
