Bonne Terre, MO

Tucked into the rolling Ozark foothills about an hour south of St. Louis, Bonne Terre is a relaxed small town with deep historic roots. French settlers originally named the area "good earth" after its rich mineral ground, and it later flourished as a central hub of Missouri's lead mining industry. Today, around 6,700 people call the community home. The historic downtown still features quiet neighborhoods fanning out from a central park, giving the older parts of town a unique layout and plenty of charm.

For newcomers, daily life revolves around local schools, friendly neighbors, and easy access to the outdoors. Bonne Terre is widely known for its massive underground mine, which now draws visitors from all over for subterranean boat tours and freshwater scuba diving. Local families send their kids to the North St. Francois County school district, while Bonne Terre City Lake and the nearby Big River provide scenic spots for fishing, kayaking, and weekend walks. It is an affordable, grounded place to settle down while staying within reach of the greater St. Louis area.
