About Booker

Booker is a Texas Panhandle town with one of the better relocation stories around: the whole community moved seven miles across the state line to meet a railroad. It began as LaKemp, Oklahoma, in 1909; when the Panhandle and Santa Fe Railway reached the area in 1919, the town picked up and re-established itself in Texas. Booker took its name from a railroad engineer, and the first train arrived on July 4, 1919, a date that still reads like the town's real birthday. Booker Independent School District keeps the community's daily life centered in town. Booker is a two-state origin story that ended with the tracks in the right place.
