Bowdon, GA

Bowdon is a small Carroll County city with an outsized educational footnote. It was incorporated on January 1, 1859, and named for Alabama congressman Franklin Welsh Bowdon. Two years earlier, Bowdon College opened in town. The college was Georgia’s fifth chartered institution of higher education and its first coeducational one, a remarkable distinction for a place that had only 2,161 residents in the 2020 census. Bowdon College closed in 1936, but its story still gives the city a stronger intellectual backstory than a quick drive through town would suggest.

Today, Georgia 100 and Georgia 166 do the practical work, carrying traffic north toward Tallapoosa and south toward Ephesus while Bowdon remains a small city with a rural setting. The city’s own language puts preservation of historic places alongside employment and growth, which feels like the right tension for a place with a nineteenth-century college in its past and ordinary municipal work in its present. The older college chapter is the detail to remember: Bowdon was once a place where a coeducational school drew attention well beyond Carroll County, and the town’s name still carries that echo.
