About Bowling Green

Bowling Green grew from a homestead established by Chester of Bowling Green, Kentucky, in 1883. Three years later he gave 40 acres to the Florida Southern Railway, and the rail line still passes through the area. That is the cleanest local read: a Hardee County city that took shape around a settler, a donated rail corridor, and the agricultural country around it. Bowling Green remains part of the county school district, with the city’s history tied closely to the railroad’s continued presence. The local shorthand is central Florida, Florida Southern tracks, and a town whose name points back to Kentucky.
