Bowling Green, MD

Bowling Green is an unincorporated Allegany County community along U.S. Route 220 southwest of Cumberland. The Potomac River forms its eastern edge, Haystack Mountain rises to the west, and Potomac Park lies to the south. For much of its history the area was farmland, later divided into building lots by the Buchanan, Roberts, and Long families. The name also gathers the nearby Roberts community into the same census-designated place, giving the area a layered map of farms, homes, roads, and older settlement names.

Bowling Green's present-day setting is shaped by transportation and employment. U.S. 220 links the community with Cumberland, while the Upper Potomac Industrial Park sits near the northern end of the CDP and the Potomac Valley's older rail and manufacturing corridors. The Bowling Green Volunteer Fire Department and county services handle local needs, and the river and mountain edge keep outdoor space close to the houses. With the road, industrial park, and Potomac all in view, Bowling Green feels like a place where western Maryland's rural and working landscapes meet at Cumberland's doorstep.
