Box Canyon, TX

Box Canyon is a small census-designated place in Val Verde County, Texas, near Amistad Reservoir north of Del Rio. The CDP covers about 3.7 square kilometers of land and sits at roughly 1,194 feet, with the canyon-and-desert setting doing most of the local work. The surrounding road network and reservoir are the useful reference points, not a traditional downtown on the map. The 78840 postal address ties it to the Del Rio side of the county rather than to a separate town center.

The name has a Census backstory. Before 2010, the area was part of the Box Canyon-Amistad CDP; the Census later split that geography into Box Canyon and Amistad. The 2020 count put 29 people in Box Canyon, so the current CDP is a very small place even by Val Verde standards. The local scoop is that Box Canyon is best understood as a compact Amistad-area map label, carrying forward one half of an older combined CDP name.
