Boynton Beach, FL

Boynton Beach has an Atlantic address with an unusual municipal map. Only about 400 feet of ocean shoreline lies inside the city, while city-owned Oceanfront Park sits across the boundary in Ocean Ridge. Reaching the public beach requires crossing that neighboring municipality, and the Intracoastal Waterway and marina are a larger presence along Boynton Beach's own eastern edge. Oceanfront Park designates areas for surfing and skimboarding alongside its general beach access. In 2026, the park opens daily from sunrise to 9 p.m., with lifeguards on duty from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. In 2020, 80,380 residents lived across a city extending inland from this narrow ocean frontage. Health care and marine activity are two visible parts of working life. Bethesda Hospital East operates a teaching hospital and medical campus on Seacrest Boulevard.

At the Intracoastal, the city marina supports fishing charters, diving trips, boat rentals, restaurants, and other waterfront businesses; it is the only publicly owned marina in southern Palm Beach County. The Boynton Beach Tri-Rail station on High Ridge Road provides regional rail service with local bus connections. Hospital shifts and rail trips center inland, while boats depart from the marina along the Intracoastal. The boundary traces a sequence of municipal name changes. The Town of Boynton incorporated in 1920. In 1931, the land east of the Intracoastal separated as Boynton Beach. That municipality adopted the name Ocean Ridge in 1938, and the original western town became the City of Boynton Beach in 1941.

Several civic buildings carry that early history into present-day use. The 1913 Boynton School now houses the Schoolhouse Children's Museum, and Addison Mizner designed the 1925 Boynton Woman's Club; both are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A former 1927 high school supplies another link: restored in 2018 and reopened in 2020, it now serves as the 28,000-square-foot Boynton Beach Arts & Cultural Center. City Hall, the public library, and the cultural center share the Town Square area, creating a civic destination close to the older downtown grid. Under its 2026 schedule, the library stays open into the evening on several weekdays and hosts classes, story times, workshops, and public meetings.

Galleries, studios, and an event hall occupy the cultural center. Much of the city's collection of over 80 public artworks stands between Town Square and the marina. Recurring First Friday gatherings bring music and vendors to Centennial Park. Town Square, Centennial Park, and the marina put much of the eastern city's cultural calendar along the Ocean Avenue corridor. The six-district, roughly 1,650-acre redevelopment area includes the marina, downtown, and Federal Highway. In 2026, the Coastal Cruiser's electric on-demand service runs in two eastern zones: one covers Town Square, downtown, Federal Highway, and the marina, while the second has a single pickup and drop-off at Oceanfront Park. The final approach to the park crosses the Ocean Avenue bridge and Ocean Ridge before reaching the beach that Boynton Beach maintains outside its own limits.
