Brackenridge, PA

Along the right bank of the Allegheny River, Brackenridge is a one-square-mile Allegheny County borough about 22 miles north of Pittsburgh. The borough grew out of the Brackenridge family’s landholdings and was established in 1901; its name reaches back to Henry Marie Brackenridge and the family’s place in western Pennsylvania history. The riverfront strip is bordered by Tarentum, Harrison Township, Natrona, and the water, so the borough’s geography is narrow and industrial by origin.

That industrial history is still visible in Brackenridge Works, the Allegheny Ludlum steel operation whose employment office replaced the family’s Oak Grove homestead; the larger facility sits mostly in Harrison Township. Earlier glass factories also belonged to the town’s working past. Today the borough’s day-to-day map runs through borough offices on Brackenridge Avenue, water and street services, parks and recreation, shared police service with Tarentum, and Highlands School District. The Allegheny, the steel works, and the borough’s one-square-mile boundary remain the clearest way to read Brackenridge.
