Bradford, TN

Bradford is a Gibson County town in west Tennessee, about a half-hour drive from Jackson on U.S. Highway 45. The 2020 census counted 1,001 residents. Bradford Special School District, city hall, public works, police and fire departments, a community center, senior center, churches, and local parks cover the everyday civic map. Agriculture, timber, livestock, and poultry have long fed the local economy, while Jackson supplies more of the shopping and medical work that a town this size cannot keep in-house.

The town began on land settled by Robert E. Bradford and took shape after the Illinois Central Railroad arrived in 1872. First called Kimball, it was renamed Bradford in 1874, and the depot drew stores, a cotton gin, a physician, a school, and the surrounding farm trade. Bradford incorporated in 1913. A 1909 downtown fire and a 2006 tornado both forced major rebuilding, but the town kept its school and civic core. Doodle Soup Days, the memorial garden, and the parks are the present-day pieces of that older gathering place along Main Street.
