Brady, NE

Brady is a village in Lincoln County, Nebraska, in the North Platte micropolitan area. The 2020 census counted 383 residents, while the village's story reaches back to the railroad and the Platte River. Explorer John Fremont recorded Brady Island after meeting a group of trappers led by a man named Brady. When Union Pacific construction crews arrived in the 1860s, nearly 1,000 workers gathered in tents and sod houses along the river. The settlement was formally laid out in January 1889, with stockyards stretching almost half a mile beside the tracks.

Brady incorporated in 1907, when the name officially shortened from Brady Island to Brady. The village's official history also traces a school back to 1874; the present K-12 school was built in 1925 and serves a broad area that includes Jeffery Lake, four miles south. Early Brady had newspapers, grain elevators, a bank, shops, and a cream station, while today's local economy is primarily agricultural. The local scoop is the pivot from railroad camp to farm community, with the old island name, rail corridor, school, and stockyards still giving the village a longer memory than its current population suggests.
