Branchville, NJ

Branchville is a Sussex County borough in northern New Jersey, set between Kittatinny Mountain and Culver Lake. Settlers from Connecticut arrived in the eighteenth century, the town was laid out in building lots in the 1820s, and Branchville became a borough in 1898 after separating from Frankford Township. The old settlement story is still visible in the village shape: a compact center, mountain roads, and water tucked into the larger Sussex County landscape.

Today the borough has an interesting split personality. Culver Lake and the wooded Kittatinny country pull the map toward the outdoors, while Selective Insurance keeps a regional business headquarters in town. Frankford Township schools serve younger students in Branchville, and older students attend High Point Regional High School. Branchville is small, but it has more going on than the borough sign suggests: a nineteenth-century town plan, a lake drainage system, a corporate office, and a school network shared with the surrounding township. The borough holds both scales at once.
