Brandon, WI

Brandon began in 1856 under the rough-and-ready name Bungtown, then grew into a Fond du Lac County village with an unusually memorable industrial footnote. The Rens Hemp Company kept producing hemp rope in Brandon until 1958, making it the last legal hemp producer in the country to operate after the World Wars. That history gives the village a story beyond the usual farm-town timeline: fields and small-town streets were connected to a national manufacturing network, with local fiber ending up in rope used by the U.S. Navy.

Water is the other thing to look for. Brandon Community Park, on the village’s west edge, holds the headwaters of the northernmost West Branch of the Rock River, so a walk there starts with a small Wisconsin trickle that belongs to a much larger river system. Village Hall and Library give the historic center its civic focus, while park rules, local events, and everyday stops keep the community grounded in the present. Brandon is compact, but its details reward attention: a former nickname, a hemp mill story, and a river beginning in the grass at the edge of town.
