Brasher Falls, NY

Brasher Falls is the largest hamlet in the Town of Brasher, St. Lawrence County, tucked around a drop in the St. Regis River. The river falls through the hamlet before continuing north toward the St. Lawrence, and NY 11C crosses the community on its way between U.S. 11 and the Lawrence side of town. The older settlement grew around a dam and sawmill built by John Crapser in 1826, then expanded with grist mills, factories, and a busy river crossing. The river is still the feature that gives the hamlet its name.

Today the town's municipal building is at 11 Factory Street, a good reminder of the name's industrial past. Brasher Falls Central School District serves the hamlet through St. Lawrence Central Elementary, Middle, and High School. State forests, trails, and the river keep the surrounding town tied to outdoor routines, while the main street and river bridge hold the settlement together. Brasher Falls has a North Country shape: a small school-and-business center organized around moving water and old mill ground.
