Bremen, OH

Bremen is a Fairfield County village with 1,479 residents in the 2020 census, platted in 1834 and named for the German city of Bremen. The village's most surprising chapter arrived in 1907, when oil was discovered in the Bremen Oil Field. The find brought an oil boom that lasted into the early 1920s, giving a small central Ohio settlement a short, intense run as an oil town. You can still see that chapter in the village's oil derrick, which became the centerpiece of local Oil Derrick Days.

Today the scale is more everyday: Bremen Elementary operates through Fairfield Union Local Schools, and a Fairfield County District Library branch serves as the public reading room. The festival keeps the oil story in circulation with its September celebration, while the school and library keep the village connected to present routines. Bremen's name points overseas, but its strongest local memory is underground. A German namesake, a few decades of drilling, and a community event built around a derrick give the village a distinct story without needing a long list of landmarks.
