Brewster, OH

Brewster is a Stark County village along Sugar Creek whose streets were laid out around a railroad shop town. The 2020 census counted 2,113 residents. In 1904, the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway bought land in the valley while looking for a route that would avoid a steep grade near Massillon. Track arrived by 1906, and after a fire destroyed the company's Norwalk shops in 1908, the new town received the rail shops and yards. Brewster incorporated in 1910, with the railroad doing most of the early heavy lifting.

The WANDLE House keeps that railroad chapter visible. Built in 1916 as a 62-room railroad YMCA, it included a restaurant, movie theater, bowling alley, and community space; it now holds railroad memorabilia and the Station Restaurant. The Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway still has its headquarters and shops in Brewster, while Brewster Cheese and Shearer's Foods give the village a second industrial identity. Tree-lined streets run out toward the Sugar Creek valley, and State Route 93 passes the old rail center. Brewster is a place where a company town grew into a village without losing the shops, yards, and working businesses that put it on the map.
