Bridgeport, OH

Bridgeport sits on the Ohio River at the mouth of Wheeling Creek, across from Wheeling, West Virginia. Colonel Ebenezer Zane laid out the settlement in 1806 under the name Canton; the present name followed a bridge built near the town in the 1810s. The river has always made Bridgeport a place of crossings, with roads and bridges linking Belmont County to Wheeling Island and the West Virginia shore. The village is part of the Wheeling metro, but its geography is older than the metro label.

Today the Military Order of the Purple Heart Bridge and the Fort Henry Bridge carry traffic into the Wheeling area, while the Ohio River and creek valley continue to shape the village’s edges. The Bridgeport branch of the Belmont County District Library gives residents a local gathering place for books, programs, and services. Homes, neighborhood streets, river infrastructure, and nearby industrial land fill out the town map. Bridgeport is a small Ohio River village whose story runs through one word: connection—between states, islands, highways, and the creek that reaches the river here.
