Bridgewater, CT

Bridgewater is a census-designated place around the populated center of the town of Bridgewater in north-central Litchfield County. The center sits around Connecticut Routes 133 and 867, with Main Street and the Town Green forming the civic core. Bridgewater Center Historic District was listed on the National Register in 2000, and its older homes, churches, town hall, post office, library, and school still gather around the green. Bridgewater was founded in 1803 after separating from New Milford, and the town's early shape grew from farms, local roads, and a compact village center.

The Town Green remains the clearest place to read Bridgewater's civic layout. The Burnham Library, Burnham School, Congregational Church, St. Mark's Episcopal Church, and Peck House Historical Society sit among the historic buildings, while the town's roads extend toward wooded hills and Lake Lillinonah. Route 67 carries the larger commercial corridor beyond the center, and much of the town still consists of residential and farm land served by private wells and septic systems. Bridgewater's local map is a preserved village core set inside a broad, mostly rural Connecticut landscape.
